Show Announcement: Blue-Eyed Hag
Friday, January 17th at 7:30pm. At Morpheus Theatre in Calgary.
Blue-Eyed Hag begins with two warring kingdoms who are about to be united by the marriage of their prince and princess. Just as the king of Chauthak lands on the island of Kytiff for the wedding festivities, a sorceress also arrives on the island with her newborn baby. The plans for a royal wedding descend into chaos as magic and comical transformations ensue. Fairies and witches cast magic, a singing princess turns into a pig, and a warrior prince cannot remove a smelly baby from his arm. It's a play with dark magic, strange transformations and loads of slapstick comedy—as if Shrek and The Princess Bride had met in the same dark forest.
From Revue:
“Yes, lovers of Shakespeare will enjoy it. But I’ll go further than that: People new to Shakespeare would do well to start here, to get a sense of the language, and the storytelling style, before moving on to The Tempest. Teachers of young people should move Heaven and Earth, open trees, board ships: whatever it takes to get them to the show.”
From Encore Michigan:
Pigeon Creek executive director Katherine Mayberry describes the play as “alternately laugh out loud funny and hauntingly poignant. Beard does a fantastic job of recreating the structure and mood shifts of a Shakespearean play, but you don’t need to know Shakespeare or The Tempest to enjoy this new story.”
From Broadway World:
“Blue-Eyed Hag explores the themes of power and the treatment of strangers in a lively and engaging script.”
